Kingston Studio Inspiration

Homestead

Well, it has been a long journey back to New Hampshire and not much time for creating, but times they are a changing. Bill and I moved from a temporary North Andover, MA loft apartment to renting a "homestead" in Kingston, NH. The packing and unpacking has come to end for at least a year, and with any luck, we will stay longer.

As I nest and settle our home, I have been exploring the yard and wooded area behind the house next to the pond, and lo and behold I spot a fabulous house warming present, ROOTS! I guess I have one to three more pieces in me to complete the "Homeward Migration" series I started almost a year ago, as the root was split over time into three pieces. I will let them dry out in the barn and bring them up to the studio soon. Not sure what lies ahead with them but it will be fun to see.

Homeward Migration Update

After a year of searching, my husband got a job and has continued on to the east coast. I will be packing up my car and taking the trip next week to join him on our adventure. I have a few more pieces in the studio I hope to complete before I leave and am looking forward to the new direction these will turn after my journey. It has been a long year and these show my struggle during the months alone in Montana. Time to forge ahead.

“Homeward Migration” is a body of work that was created in the last few months. It has been a way for me to express some of my emotions during the journey my husband and I have been on to relocate on the east coast after the loss of his job in April. Each piece is meant to stand alone, but I find it to be a more powerful statement as an installation and will be continuing to post each piece as it is completed.

A Creative Expression to Recessionary Times

Having lived in southern California for the past 25 years my husband and I have begun our migration back to New England to be close to family.

We had always planned to head east after our two children were settled in their collegiate lives, but unfortunately the timing of our move was accelerated due to the unexpected loss of my husband’s job in April 2009.

Given only two weeks pay, we were forced to act quickly. Our hope was that he could find work locally so we could remain in our home. Unfortunately this didn’t work out as we had hoped. Not wanting to sell our home, we rented it out and search for a new home.

We were fortunate that my sister’s home on the western slope of the Rockies was offered to us until Bill found work. So in October 2009, we moved to the Mission Valley in western Montana and spent our first ever holidays away from our home and apart from our children.

After the holidays Bill headed east by himself to continue his search for work, leaving me and our dog to wait for word.

“Homeward Migration” was created in the last month. It has been a way for me to express some of my emotions during this journey. Each piece is meant to stand alone, but I find it to be a more powerful statement as a grouped installation.

These are the first three pieces of a larger body of work that has been completed at this point. I will continue to update as I complete the remaining works.

Studio Treasures

Since I have been in Montana, I have collected treasures for the studio, some of which are being incorporated in my new work, Homeward Migration. While clipping the juniper, I found a tiny birds nest where a squirrel placed his walnut, a wasps nest and skulls. I continue to hike and keep my eyes peeled for the bright green mossy sticks. Enjoy!

Had a fabulous month long residency at Vermont Studio Center in February, met some wonderfully creative artists and writers. Many paintings were started, but only one completed there, but was able to work on a fun installation of a Vermont landscape, which would have never thought to do in my own studio.

Biophilia- our genetic programming for the love of nature, not just for food and shelter, but peace of mind, is a term that might help describe the content of my paintings. Sharing my attraction to shapes found in nature and memories of color seen while spending time there, forms the topic of the painting. The process becomes the language of paint, shape, color and space. The complexity in some of the paintings comes from the satisfaction felt in problem solving. The conversation starts in a more intuitive manner, a struggle emerges, and a surprise appears, and ends in a peaceful resolution. Contrasts of the different qualities of paint are phrases, and juxtaposing theses qualities keep the discussion on going and alive. Visual sensory experience of the coast, desert and lakes with expansive views and universal peaceful color combinations of blue and beige, is hard wired in our brains to bring positive emotions. My hope to create a similar reaction in the viewer.

While on my retreat in Montana, I produced two paintings inspired by the the works of William M. Thompson, a landscape artist and illustrator from the 1940's & 1950's. His work in pastels and oils have a soft touch, which I haven't quite captured, his prints and originals are highly collectable. Well, and he just happens to be my grandfather in-law, so these are made special for my husband Bill.

What is repo mod you are asking? Well, I am still working on the definition, but it came to me when thinking about where we are now, after Post Modernism. I thought, hmmm, Retro Post Modernism, well, with all the mash ups in music, and art borrowing from art and remixing it up to a new level, and well, repo as in stealing and reproductive technologies, cloning... this painting has borrowed images and graphics and different techniques all in one. I think it can be a new phrase to explain the nonsense and humor in our lives, history repeating, recreating new worlds in electronic boxes, the need for handmade, human voice and acoustic guitar.
